Lot Essay

The arms are those of King Dom Luís I (1838-1889), 21st King of Portugal who reigned from 1861-1889. This was one of four Chinese services made for the King in circa 1880. See N. de Castro, Chinese Porcelain and the Heraldry of the Empire, Opporto, 1988, p. 244 for a vegetable tureen and cover from the Jorge Veiga Collection. A plate from this service is in the MacCann Collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, illustrated by M. Beurdeley, Porcelain of the East India Companies, London, 1962, p. 186, cat. 159.
