Gyobu nashiji ground; decoration in gold takamaki-e, hiramaki-e and togidashi-e with coral, silver and gilt metal and foil; interior nashiji; rims silver

The exterior with images from Chapter 23, Hatsune [The First Warbler] of the eleventh-century novel Genji monogatari [The Tale of Genji; see also lot 65]: in the centre a gilt metal uguisu [bush warbler] on flowering plum branches, in the lower foreground a garden fence and on the left a corner of Genji's Rokujo mansion
