A MINIATURE TIERED LACQUER BOX
Meiji Period (Late 19th/Early 20th Century)
Consisting of a larger lower tier and a smaller upper tier and cover; the exterior with a black lacquer ground embellished with gold hirame flakes, decorated in gold and aokin togidashi-e, shell and gold foil with rice plants and naruko [bird-scarers] hanging on cords, the lid with five birds in gold hiramaki-e, the rims gold lacquer, the other surfaces with gold and silver hirame flakes
