A FIGURE OF AMIDA BUDDHA
Muromachi Period (15th/16th Century)
Carved wood assembled in yosegi technique with traces of gilding over a black lacquer paste discoloured by incense smoke, the byakugo [whorl of hair in the centre of the forehead] and hair-ornament of crystal; the lotus pedestal also of carved wood with more extensive gold lacquer on the sides and red lacquer on the top; the kohai [halo] of carved wood with further traces of gold lacquer
The facial features and seated pose typical of the 'classical' revival initiated in the late 12th century, the body slightly elongated, the right hand raised with the palm facing outward in the semui gesture, the left hand resting on the left knee facing upwards and with the thumb and index finger in the yogan gesture; slight old damage and wear
