ROLEWINCK, Werner (1425-1502). Fasciculus temporum. Venice: Erhard Ratdolt, 24 November 1480 [and 8 September 1485].
Chancery 2° (290 x 201mm). Collation: [1-98 104] (1/1r blank, 1/1v address by Ratdolt to Nicolao Mocenico, 1/2r table, 2/1 text, 10/4 colophon). 76 leaves; fos. 4/3-6, 7/2-7, 8/3.6, 9/1-3, 6-8 and 10/1-4 (including colophon) are from the 1480 edition, and the remainder from the 1485 edition. 59 lines (variable), table in 3 columns, introduction in 2 columns. Type: 4:76G (text), 9:130G (heading on 1v), 6:56G (Noah's Ark inscription on 11v). 67 woodcuts, including repeats and multiple-block scenes, genealogical diagrams, woodcut ornamental initials. (First leaf mounted without loss, some small wormholes, small paper flaw affecting one word, a few small tears neatly repaired, several bifolia rehinged.) 18th-century vellum-backed buff paperboards, red and olive leather spine labels (rubbed at extremities). Provenance: a few early marginal annotations -- J. Jamieson, Edinburgh (inscription dated 1814 and note on the edition on front pastedown).
A composite copy, combining sheets from Ratdolt's first and fourth editions. Erhard Ratdolt printed five editions of Rolewinck's popular universal history, all close reprints of one another. The present copy was undoubtedly made up at a very early date, very probably in Ratdolt's shop. The sheets (always whole sheets, not individual pages) are interspersed throughout the volume, and annotations in an early hand are found on both 1480 and 1485 sheets. Because Ratdolt's editions were close reprints of each other, the sheets from various editions could be combined easily, and it is perhaps surprising that more such composite copies have not come to light; other examples have presumably escaped detection, owing to their nearly identical typesetting. The 1480 sheets in this copy are marked with scales or an anchor, while the 1485 sheets are marked with a bull's heads, 3 hills, or scales. The early 19th-century owner, J. Jamieson, noted similarities between this copy with its 1480 colophon and Earl Spencer's 1481 Ratdolt edition described by Dibdin, wondering if the 1481 edition might in fact be the 1480 edition 'with the last page reprinted, as the former [1480 edition] had been sold off?'
