Collation: 1-802. 4 full-page lithographs of the Evangelists, woodcut text illustrations of an antique medallion and a Madonna and Child, historiated headpieces and type-ornament decoration, red printing from quire 63, the red printed separately after the black. CONTEMPORARY LEBANESE BINDING of dark brown goatskin, sides panelled with blind outer roll and 4 rounded floral sprays with traces of gilt at centre, a gilt cross in each spine compartment, 2 spine labels, yellow edges (some rubbing at extremities).
One of a small group of Christian Arabic books printed at the monastery of St. John the Baptist at Dair ash-Shuwair, Lebanon. The press was established in 1734 by the Syrian Abdallah Zahir (1684-1748), who also cut the punches for the type. A very fresh copy. Darlow & Moule 1661; Schnurrer 360.
