OGILBY, John (1600-1676). The Entertainment of His ... Majestie Charles II in his passage through the City of London to his Coronation. London: Tho[mas] Roycroft, 1662.
2° (484 x 321mm). Engraved portrait of the author by P. Lambart after P. Lilly, etched frontispiece of the royal arms by W. Hollar, and 12 plates, including 8 double-page etchings, all but one by Hollar, the double-page plates on guards, engraved illustration on Z1v, engraved vignettes of coins. (The portrait and frontispiece both inlaid, title, dedication and 3 plates detached, some guards renewed, some slight marginal tears and old repairs to folds, E2 with two repaired tears causing slight loss, light worming at lower margin of text leaves and in the last 4 plates.) Contemporary panelled calf, red speckled edges (covers detached). Provenance: Mr. Phillipps (note of purchase for 0-6-0 on March 9th 1674 on rear pastedown); Victor Albert George Child Villiers, Earl of Jersey, Osterley Park (bookplate); Alexander Meyrick Broadley (bookplate dated 1895); Sir William Augustus Fraser of Ledeclune and Morar (bookplate); John L. Nevinson.
FIRST EDITION. The first five plates, each double-page and in four horizontal rows, form a panorama of Charles II's coronation procession. All but the fourth of these plates were etched by Hollar. The double-page plates of the trophies of Marius, of a procession on foot in six horizontal rows, and of the choir at Westminster Abbey filled with spectators, are also by Hollar [see Pennington 570-575, 2422 and 2601A]. The four single-page plates depict triumphal archways. Brunet IV, 174: 'livre magnifique'; Graesse V, 15; Hiler p. 672; Wing O-171.
