8° (163 x 114mm). Each page within a series of woodcut decorative borders, Breton's device on title. A4r to H8r with 121 woodcuts of figures in costume, printed one to a page with descriptive quatrain below. (D4 with lower blank corner torn away, light marginal spotting and soiling.) 18th-century French calf, spine gilt in compartments with the alternating crests of the prince de Soubise [Olivier 2034 fers 8-9], marbled endpapers (spine chipped at head and foot, and slightly wormed). Provenance: Charles de Rohan, prince de Soubise et d'Epinoy, duc de Rohan-Rohan et de Ventadour (1715-1787, binding and shelf-marks) -- Bernard Quaritch (collation note on rear pastedown) -- John L. Nevinson (bookplate).
SECOND EDITION OF THIS RARE COSTUME BOOK FROM THE LIBRARY OF THE PRINCE DE SOUBISE. Breton's first edition of 1562 is cited by Colas as THE FIRST KNOWN WORK ON COSTUME. Colas maintains that François Descerpz, whose name appears in the dedication to Henri de Bourbon, is the author of the descriptive verses. In one issue of the 1567 edition, his name appears as publisher though spelt as Des Prez, and Mortimer suggests that he may be the artist as well as author. The great library of the prince de Soubise was sold in 1788, the year after his death, a large portion being puchased by the comte d'Artois and given to the Bibliothèque de l'Arsenal.
