"There is a nice story about this drawing. I took it to Mr. Davey, the framer and friend of Lowry in Bridge Street by the side of Kendal Milne to be framed. He at once laughed and said,
'This is old George Roberts the Glossop hatter!'
After I had collected it I took it to Lowry, who always liked to see the drawings when framed and, of course, the oils. I told him the story and he adopted a stern look.
'The very idea, Sir. I would never dream of insulting an old friend with such a picture!'
We talked for a while and I went to leave. He stopped me in the hall, littered with pictures he had bought at local exhibitions and never hung, and he drew me towards him...
'But it IS a good likeness you know!'"
