Lot Essay

A parallel can be drawn between this drawing and at least six others which Degas executed between 1888 and 1890 from photographs by Edward Muybridge, a short while after the publication of Animal Locomotion. Stimulated by these photographs, he wrote to Batholome, "I have not yet done enough horses".
