Warrant on paper, signed 'George R' at the head, St. James's, 10 June 1782, large 4°, authorising the Right Honorable Thomas Townshend to countersign commissions as a Principal Secretary of State, embossed seals, countersigned by Grantham (creased on folds).

Lot Essay

Thomas Townshend, first Viscount Sidney (1733-1800) held numerous government posts in his career as a longstanding Whig MP for Whitchurch in Hampshire. In March 1782 he became Secretary at War in Rockingham's second administration.
