RUDYARD KIPLING (1865-1936)
One-page typed letter marked Private, signed 'Rudyard Kipling' and with autograph amendments, from Bateman's, Burwash, Sussex, 31 October 1921, 4°, to Mr Candler of the Bank of England, thanking him profusely for his offer of the Presidency of the Motor Cycling Club but, with apologies, has to decline as he is often out of England. He also reveals the real reason he can not accept, that his 'views of the Motor Cycle, with or without side-car, but specially with, are absolutely unfit for print...Were I President of the M.C.C. even for a day, my first official step would be to move the disbandment of the Club and all members permanent incarceration in Lewes Goal', ending this amusing tirade with best wishes for the club (creased on folds, marked, adhesive tape marks on corners and edges), stuck with adhesive tape into a copy of John Gross' Rudyard Kipling, the man, his work and his world (London, 1972).
