THE VISITATION, historiated initial 'A' cut from an ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT CHOIRBOOK ON VELLUM
[north-eastern Italy, follower of Benedetto Bordone, mid-16th century]
150 x 143mm. The figures of the Virgin and Elisabeth embracing are very delicately drawn. They are within classical architecture, a landscape with tree behind. The letter is made up from multi-coloured foliage and horns, on one side a grotesque head biting the crossbar, on gold ground (very slightly rubbed). Music on four-line staves on verso.
Included with the lot is an historiated initial 'C' apparently from the same manuscript, 150 x 135mm, showing the Virgin within a mandorla (a little rubbed, the left side of the letter cropped).
