Major Osmund Hornby Warne, M.C., was born in January 1891 and was originally commissioned into the South Staffordshire Regiment as a 2nd Lieutenant in January 1912. Resigning his Commission in April 1914, he was mobilised from the Special Reserve on the outbreak of hostilities and witnessed active service in Togoland. Subsequently commissioned into the Manchester Regiment, he was attached to the Egyptian Army from December 1915 and served in the Darfur operations of the following year and with the Egypt Expeditionary Force from September 1917 until October 1918. Having been advanced to Captain back in July 1916, Warne was awarded the M.C. for his services in 21st Balloon Company, 4th Battery, Egyptian Army.
He remained attached to the E.A. until January 1925, when he transferred to the Sudan Defence Force, this latter posting lasting until the end of the year. Further advanced to Major in the Manchester Regiment in early 1929, he went on to serve in the Burma operations prior to retiring in 1933. Warne was once more called up on the renewal of hostilities from the Regular Army Reserve of Officers, and served with his old Regiment until the end of the War, onetime being attached to the Air Ministry and later, in North Africa, between 1943-44, holding the Local Rank of Lieutenant-Colonel.
