Lot Essay

Major Gilbert Hamilton was born in Glasgow in 1808 and was educated at Glasgow High School. Nominated as a Cadet in the Honourable East India Company in 1824, he sailed for Bengal in the General Kyd in 1825 with the rank of Ensign. Posted to the 53rd Bengal Native Infantry, he was promoted Lieutenant in 1828 and appointed Temporary Interpreter and Quarter-Master in 1832 and Acting Adjutant in 1834. Hamilton was promoted Captain in 1840 and served in Cabul in the First Afghan War, seeing action in the Khyber Pass. Granted furlough to Europe on sick leave during the First Sikh War, he was back with his Regiment in time for the Second Sikh War, when he served with the Lahore Garrison. He retired in 1850, gaining the rank of Honorary Major in 1854.
