Commander Arthur Lingham was born in July 1854 and entered the Royal Navy as a Cadet in April 1868. Advanced to Sub. Lieutenant in October 1874 and to Lieutenant in December 1879, he appears to have been unsuccessfully recommended for a Royal Humane Society Medal in February 1881, following a rescue attempt in Malta harbour while aboard H.M.S. Agincourt. In the following year he participated in the Egyptian operations aboard the same ship but was retired physically unfit that December, the causes of his disability had been 'contracted in the Service'. In November 1899, however, Lingham was recalled to the Transport Service for the duration of the Boer War, services that won him a Recommendation for advancement from Captain Luscombe, R.N. and a Commendation from the G.O.C. Cape Colony for his 'firmness of character' in carrying out 'delicate duties'. Duly appointed Commander in April 1902, Lingham once more reverted to the Retired List and died in October 1915.
