Sergeant-Major Frederick Walter Huntley enlisted in the Army as a Private in the 3rd Dragoon Guards in 1898 and served with them during the Boer War. In 1910 he was awarded the R.V.M. as Bearer of the Royal Standard on the occasion of the Royal Visit to Aldershot. Just prior to the outbreak of the Great War his Regiment was recalled from its station in Egypt and in October 1914 embarked for France where it formed part of the 6th Cavalry Brigade in the 3rd Cavalry Division. The Brigade took part in the First Battle of Ypres. In August 1915 Sergeant Huntley transferred to the Royal Flying Corps and in February 1916 was advanced to Temporary Sergeant-Major. His rare Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal was awarded in October 1916.
