Brigadier-General Sir Dalrymple Arbuthnot, Bt., C.M.G., D.S.O., was born in April 1867 and entered the Army as a Gentleman Cadet in August 1884. Appointed a Lieutenant in the Royal Artillery in February 1886, he was posted to India in September 1891 and participated in the Relief of Chitral operations of 1895. Advanced to Captain in September of the following year, he next witnessed active service in South Africa, where he served from November 1900 until late 1902 and was present in operations in Cape Colony, Orange Free State and at Belfast. Arbuthnot was Mentioned in Despatches and advanced to Major in October 1901. Attaining the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in October 1913, he took command of 44th Brigade, R.F.A., and took it to France in mid-August 1914. Then in May 1915 he joined the Staff of 28th Division, where he remained employed until joining 12 Corps in January 1916. His final wartime appointment was with 23rd Division on the Italian Front between November 1917 and July 1918. Mentioned in Despatches on no less than seven occasions, he was given the Brevet of Colonel and awarded the C.M.G. and D.S.O. Latterly a Brigadier-General, Arbuthnot retired in April 1920 and died in March 1941.
