Engine: six cylinder-in-line, 3,669 cc; Gearbox: four speed manual; Suspension: semi-elliptic leaf spring front and rear; Brakes: four wheel drum. Right hand drive.

An early Derby Bentley, chassis B86EF was on test at the works in May 1935, and was then forwarded to Hooper and Co. to receive its current sporting close-coupled coachwork. Copies of the Hooper drawing for design 8372, note its intended original purchaser as a Dr Thwaite of Edgbaston, which is confirmed by the factory build sheets. Detail features of the coachwork include sunroof, side-mounted spare wheel, and pockets to the rear of the seats. His new car was completed and guaranteed in August that year, before being registered with the Birmingham pre-fix 'BOC'.

Having chosen the specifications of the design himself, it is perhaps not surprising that the Doctor would have had a long association with it, which it would appear lasted nearly thirty years, before he parted with the Bentley in 1964. The car then travelled north to Reverend G.A. Harrington of Wakefield, and later moved further still when it came into the ownership of well-known car collector R. 'Bobbie' McIntyre of Sorn Castle in 1983. At this time some restoration was undertaken, it seems with new carpets fitted and attention to the engine, which has had its block stitched. On its completion the car was entered in the Bentley Drivers Club Jubilee at Buxton in 1986, where it was driven by a young Jamie McIntyre aged 15, who showed a clean pair of heels at Oulton Park and Chatsworth driving tests! On Mr McIntyre's death, the car was disposed of in the public auction of his collection, and was later acquired by the present owner at auction in 1991.

Ostensibly a very original example, today the restoration work has aged and the interior is now a little tired. Unfortunately, the paintwork which was renewed in previous ownership has cracking in places due to sinkage, particularly around the scuttle and boot lid, but this does not reflect the structural order of the bodywork which appears sound and the doors-shut fitting is good.

On a recent inspection and test drive, the car started promptly, showed good oil pressure when idling and accelerated briskly on the road. New tyres are fitted all round, as is a modern fuel pump and the car is equipped with wheel-spanner, mallet and two-piece starting handle, which are stored under the bonnet. A current MoT certificate comes with the car and a comprehensive history file, including copies of the factory records and Hooper design, with two handbooks for the model.

A charming example which with some sympathetic improvement and with basic mechanical sorting, will no doubt reward its purchaser with an excellent and usable post-vintage Bentley.
