Lot Essay

This watercolour demonstrates Ruskin's influence upon the work of Hunt, both in the Turneresque handling of the medium and in its subject. Ruskin discussed the necessity for this extensively, singling out the 'cliffs of Lauterbrunnen, in the Oberland' as perfect instances of mountains formed by the erosion of soft strata lying over hard (see J. Ruskin, Modern Painters, 1897, p. 157).
