Cornelis de Bie from Amsterdam made the present beaker in 1622. The chased beaker is gilded on the inside. The outside is decorated with engraved foliate motives, strapwork and three vases with flowers. In a later period the engraved medallions with personifications of Faith, Hope and Love were added. The medallions are held by putti, The almost invisible initials on the bottom of the beaker, HIL and SMS, were probably added by the same master.
With its slightly diverging upper part of the body, the beaker is typical for the period 1600-1650. Before that period the beakers were almost of cylindrical shape. Around circa 1650 the beakers become of trumpet form.
Cornelis de Bie was baptised in Amsterdam in 1598 and married Catherina ten Oever in 1621. He was buried in the Zuiderkerk in 1630. The maker's mark of the Bie, an ewer, was attributed to him on the basis of two of his testaments in which he called his house in Doelenstraat in Amsterdam 'In 't Gulden Lampet' (in the golden ewer). Silversmith Johannes Lutma was one of the guardians of De Bie's under-aged children. In 1638 Lutma married Sara de Bie, Cornelis' Sister1.
