Each with a rectangular back with a solid lozenge flanked by fluted columns, above a solid bowfront seat and a fluted apron, on turned tapering fluted legs headed by patera and joined by turned baluster cross stretchers, stamped 'RR' and five chairs with incised initials 'ID', two legs with restored breaks (6)

Lot Essay

Messrs A. Hepplewhite & Co's, The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide', 1788 (pl. 10) illustrated a related chair-back pattern, which is conceived in the French manner with a lozenged compartment framed by flower-capped Pompeian columns.
