This elegant form of sideboard table, with French Pompeian columnar legs, was introduced around 1767 by the architect Robert Adam (d. 1792) and first popularised by the carver Matthias Lock's New Book of Pier-Frames, Ovals, Girandoles, Tables etc., 1769. Its antique- fluted frame includes festive elements, such as Apollo-sunflowered patterae, while the legs and stump feet are wrapped by palms, 'Venus' pearls and 'Pan' reeds, which all feature in Lock's patterns (pls. 2 and 3) (see M. Heckscher, 'Lock and Copland: A Catalogue of the Engraved Ornament', Furniture History, 1979 (pls. 65A & B)).
