Crossbanded overall in kingwood, the sloping rectangular hinged top crossbanded in kingwood, banded in fruitwood and centred by a stipple engraving of the personifications of Arts, Architecture and Sculpture within an oval, enclosing a fitted interior with hinged gilt-tooled maroon leather-lined writing-slope and four open compartments, restorations

Lot Essay

The box, within a marble-like frame of yew, displays an antique medallion celebrating the Cardinal Arts and is taken from F. Bartolozzi's 1783 engraving after Angelica Kauffmann's (d. 1810) painting that was entitled The Three Fine Arts (C. Helbock, Angelica Kauffmann, Düsseldorf, 1979, fig. 181).
