Lot Essay

This portrait relates to Sir Anthony van Dyck's three-quarter-length portrait of Queen Henrietta Maria, in the Gemaldegalerie, Dresden (for which see Gemaldegalerie, Dresden, Alte Meister, Katalog der Ausgestellten Werke, Leipzig, 1992, no. 1034, and E. Larsen, The Paintings of Anthony van Dyck, 1988, I, no. 833, II, pl. 297b).

Remigius van Leemput was probably of Flemish, though possibly of French, origin, and was established in London by October 1635. He had a considerable reputation as a copyist especially after Van Dyck.
