Lot Essay

Little is known about Lenthall, but Waterhouse records portraits by him of the second and third wives of the 1st Viscount Fermanagh in the Claydon inventory (E.K. Waterhouse, The Dictionary of 16th and 17th Century British Painters, 1988, p. 178).

The attribution of this portrait to Lenthall is based on comparison with the artist's portrait of Mr. Brand, dated 1671, offered in these Rooms, 12 April 1991, lot 5, which displays very similar treatment of the draperies and background.
