Lot Essay

When J.S.F. Tännich left the Kiel factory in 1768 or 1769, he was replaced by Johann Buchwald of Eckernförde, and Buchwald's son-in-law, the painter of the present lot. It is very clear that Leihamer is referring to his father-in-law as Monsieur B in the inscription, and it would appear that this pot-pourri vase is both a document and a celebration of their working relationship. As a documentary piece of this type would appear to be unique, it is also probable that they considered this pot-pourri vase to be their masterpiece.
