Lot Essay
Part of a series of landscape drawings executed by Domenico and his father Giambattista in the region of Udine. Father and son visited that region twice, once in the summer of 1757 when they painted frescoes in the Villa Valmarana, and again in August and September 1759 for the decoration of the church of Santa Maria della Purità in Udine: Giambattista painted an altarpiece and the ceiling of the church while his son executed eight chiaroscuri for the walls. The present drawing was probably sketched from the campanile of the church of Santa Madonna delle Grazie and depicts the castle with the small church of Santa Maria with its campanile. George Knox dates the drawing to the artist's second trip to Udine in 1759, G. Knox, op. cit., p. 70, with a photograph of that view in Udine today.
