Lot Essay

Similar in technique to a drawing of Saint Francis in the Prado, Madrid, which is, like this one, intended for a print, A.E. Pérez Sánchez, Dibujos espanoles, siglos XV-XVII, Madrid, 1972, no. FA. 93, pl. LVIII. Another drawing by Schut was exhibited at the Louvre, A.E. Pérez Sánchez and L. Boubli, Dessins espagnols, Maîtres des XVIe et XVIIe siècles, Paris, 1991, no. 98, illustrated.
Schut studied with his eponomous uncle, of the same name, in Antwerp. He moved to Spain with his father, civil engineer for King Philip IV, and settled in Seville.
