Part of the original set of portraits which Carmontelle executed at the court of the Duc d'Orleans, of which he made replicas for important members of the court on request. The collection remained intact until the Duc d'Aumale acquired them from Gordon Duff, the descendant of John Duff. The majority of the sheets are now at the Musée Condé, Chantilly. For more information see the introduction to a group sold in these Rooms, 15 December 1992, lots 176-183, illustrated, and at Christie's, New York, 12 January 1995, lots 107-9.
