A rare mid 19th Century lacquered-brass theodolite,
signed on the silvered dial E. Kraft & Sohn in Wien No. 357, the telescope with rack and pinion adjustment, four spider's web adjusters, the graduated bubble level with two Y-supports located on the telescope by twin fold-over shaped clamps, the supports located on the limb over the vertical half-circle, the silvered scale graduated on one side only 45°-0-45°, with silvered vernier, tangent-screw fine adjustment and clamp, the axis with twin shaped supports and supplementary limb fitted to the horizontal plate supporting the compass box with needle and clamp device, the horizontal circle with silvered scale, single vernier with light shade, tangent-screw fine adjustment and clamp, raised on a tripod or staff mounting incorporating three adjustable screw feet with ball-shaped caps arranged to adjust against the underside of the horizontal plate, on wood display base -- 13¼in. (33.6cm.) high

AUSTRIA AT THE INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION OF 1862. Catalogue prepared by Prof. Dr. Jos. Arenstein 1862. Page 4 records in class 13 of the Austrian members of the International Jury C.E. Kraft as senior machinist Vienna. In class 13 were included philosophical instruments and processes depending upon their use, which included theodolites such as this example and other optical instruments by many Austrian opticians and other makers. E. Kraft & Sohn awarded a gold medal in 1845 in Vienna, bronze in 1854 in Munich and bronze in 1855 in Paris. He is recorded as a maker of all forms of surveying and other mathematical instruments, and his short biography with reports on instruments appears on page 58 of this paper, a photocopy of which is included with the lot.
