A JAPANESE DOUBLE FOLIOT GILT-BRASS FLOOR-STANDING LANTERN CLOCK
Unsigned; first half 19th Century
The case of typical form with turned baluster gilt-brass columns to the four angles flanking foliate engraved side doors and rear panel pierced for the alarm square, similarily engraved dial with silvered chapter ring and pierced blued steel hand, inner alarm ring, two small apertures below for the calendar, the movement with twin crown wheels regulated by twin gilt-brass foliots serated along the top edge for the adjustable regulation weights, the strike train with countwheel and vertical hammer arbor (now lacking hammer) striking on the large bell above, the spring-wound alarm train striking on the same bell by a double steel-headed hammer, the padouk pedestal plinth case decorated with gilt scrolling karakusa on the legs and hood and embellished with red lacquer peony blossom and inlaid with leaves of mother-of-pearl, the detachable hood with silk sound frets above four glazed sides resting on a moulded pedestal supported on four bowed legs conjoined by stretchers
