Lot Essay

A carriage clock by Klentschi, number 645, of related design is discussed and illustrated in Charles Allix and Peter Bonnert Carriage Clocks, Antique Collectors' Club, Woodbridge 1974, p.311, Plate X/5. The striking on the present clock also is particular to those produced in the Swiss canton of Neuchâtel, whereby grande sonnerie is struck at night and petite sonnerie during the day. The change over occurs automatically at eight o'clock in the morning and evening. See also Derek Roberts Carriage and Other Travelling Clocks, Schiffer, Pennsylvania 1993, Fig.15a,b.
