An English rosewood eight-day four-glass mantel chronometer
Thomas Mercer, St Albans, No.1254. Third quarter 20th century
The case with brass handle to the stepped top with escapement viewing glass, ripple mouldings to the cornices, on part bombé stepped base with flattened brass feet, silvered slip to the square silvered Roman dial with subsidiary seconds ring at XII and up-down ring at VI, signed in the centre Thomas Mercer St. Albans No. 1254, with blued steel hands, the four back-screwed bulbous pillar movement with spot-finished plates, with two spare screws, single chain fusee, cut bimetallic balance with circular heat compensation weights, stop/start lever and steel helical spring, with spot-finished platform and bridge, inscribed MADE IN ENGLAND 13 JEWELS, with maintaining power, signed on the backplate No.1254 and MADE BY Thomas Mercer FOR W. Phillipson
