The highly elaborate case encrusted overall with ormolu flowers and foliage in high relief, the tortoiseshell-veneered onion-domed top surmounted by an elaborate urn finial, the four out-set angles surmounted by elaborate cast urn finials issuing flowers, trailing floral ormolu volutes to the out-set angles on twin foliate cast scrolling feet, the side doors set with ormolu trellis and foliate-cast sound panels, the arched dial covered in red silk and overlaid with elaborate foliate cast mounts, the silver chapter ring with silver cartouche chapters with red enamel Turkish numerals set in ormolu cartouches and within a red enamelled silver minute ring, elaborate foliate cast ormolu hands, the spandrels cast as musical trophies, the arch set in the centre with a silver disc enamelled in blue with the Sultan's signature, the horizontal silver plaque below inlaid with blue enamel text, the large movement with twin going barrels, anchor escapement, hour and quarter strike on two bells with let-off on the hour for the six tune musical movement

Lot Essay

The silver disc in the arch is enamelled with the Suhra and also the monogram of the Sultan El Gafran. The plaque below approximately translates to: The only clock made by Omar Gahn, Clockmaker to the Royal House. The plaque on the rear door bears the date 1217=1817/1818 AD
