Type: 1:90GA (HPT type 1). 2- to 8-line initial spaces. Six 8- to 4-line Lombard initials in blue with fine red penwork infill and flourishes highlighted with green and yellow wash (extenders cropped); 2- to 4-line simple Lombard initials and paragraph marks in alternating red and blue, underlining in red, capital strokes in yellow. Late 15th or early 16th-century Netherlandish blind-tooled calf over wooden boards, covers tooled with double fillets forming large rectangle with saltire pattern, the interstices stamped with repeated small fleur-de-lys tool, pastedowns from a contemporary vellum manuscript document, probably Netherlandish (text side down, contemporary docket visible inside front cover, including the name Jacop Bronckaert), a few deckle edges preserved (rebacked, rubbed, free endleaves renewed); modern folding cloth case. Provenance: ?Pieter Burmann the Younger (1668-1741), Dutch classical scholar and philologist, library sold Feb. 26-March 17, 1742 (signature "PBurmanni" on first page); neat 18th-century marginalia.
Third edition of the works of the third-century martyr Cyprian, a pagan rhetorican converted to Christianity, Bishop of Carthage from ca. 248. The text reprints Joannes Andrea Bussi's original edition (Rome: Sweynheym and Pannartz 1471), with the addition of the spurious De bono pudicitiae, Ad Novitianum, and Orationes. Richard Pafraet's first press at Deventer, active from 1477 to 1485, maintained important relations with the Cologne printing trade while serving the vast market to the west. Pafraet's first type ("in every respect of outstanding quality": Hellinga, Printing Types, p. 40), used here, was acquired from Cologne. Dated by BMC and GW to circa 1480, this edition was dated more precisely by the Hellingas from the state of the type: in its first state the capitals differ from the Cologne sorts, which Pafraet did not acquire until 1479.
A LARGE AND FINE COPY. HC 5894; BMC IX, 43 (IB. 47522); BSB-Ink. C-726; Campbell 520; GW 7886; Polain(B) 1211; Goff C-1012.
