WHITMAN, Walt. Specimen Days and Collect. Philadelphia: David McKay, 1882-83. 8o. Rebound in brown morocco, gilt, edges gilt (rebacked, inner hinges strengthened with cloth tape, rubbed at extremities).
FIRST EDITION, second printing, first issue. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY WHITMAN on a portion of the original yellow front free endpaper pasted to the front flyleaf: "Richard W. Colles from the author Sept: 1886." Whitman wrote Colles on 7 September 1886 to say that he could send "another 'Leaves of Grass,' author's special ed'n & 'Specimen Days' -- would be 1 s2" (Correspondence, E.H. Miller, vol. IV, p.44-45). Another letter of 28 January 1888 states that Whitman is "waiting to get good copies of 'Specimen Days'" to send to Colles. According to Miller, Colles was probably one of the many students of Edward Dowden of Trinity College, Dublin, who became great admirers of Whitman. BAL 21627; Meyerson A11.1.b<->1.
