$2½, 1856-S MS-67 (PCGS). This is an absolutely stunning quarter eagle, one of the highlights of the present offering. Indeed, this coin would stand tall and proud in any auction offering or collection or museum display-it is simply amazing, simply incredible! During his examination of the treasure from the S.S. Central America, Ronald J. Gillio, consultant to the California Gold Marketing Group, was fascinated with this coin-the likes of which he had not imagined could exist, and said that it was his very favorite.

Central America, Ronald J. This is the single finest example among eight from the S.S. Central America treasure graded by PCGS. The second finest is just MS-63. Only a few minute, microscopic abrasions keep this gem out of the "perfect or MS-70 coin" category. Just 72,120 quarter eagles were struck in the third year of San Francisco Mint operations.
This is the first collectible quarter eagle from San Francisco, the 1854-S being virtually unobtainable. No quarter eagles were struck at San Francisco in 1855. Most examples of this issue show extensive wear with typical examples grading just VF or EF. Almost needless to say, this is the finest example of this issue certified by PCGS. The next best is a single MS-65, sold by Bowers and Merena as part of the Harry W. Bass, Jr. Collection. Just 15 other Mint State examples have been graded by PCGS, all far below the piece offered here.
