Lot Essay

The maîtrise date for Etienne Meunier is not recorded. Based in the rue de Clery, he was active during the reign of Louis XV until the early 1770s. His work was partly sold though the intermediary of marchands-ébénistes such as Etienne Igoe, but primarily Pierre Migeon (B. Pallot, The Art of the Chair, Paris, 1989, p. 312). These fauteuils are en suite with a set of four fauteuils in the Wrightsman Collection, which are illustrated in F. Watson, The Wrightsman Collection, New York, Vol I, cat 5A-D,1966, p. 9.
