A PAIR OF GEORGE II MAHOGANY ARMCHAIRS
Each with a rectangular padded back, arms and seat covered in green foliate damask, the arms on downswept supports headed by twisting patera issuing acanthus and ending in acanthus, on cabriole legs with acanthus angles and headed by shells, on claw feet, with sunk brass and leather castors, one chair with remains of paper labels to the seat-rail and inscribed in pencil to the front seat-rail '2/8/5/' and '2', one front-left foot with restored break

Lot Essay

A related pair of chairs with similar twisting patera and acanthus-enriched arms was sold anonymously, Sotheby's London, 21 February 1997, lot 90. A further similar pair, also with carved back legs, was sold from the collection of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Nipon, Gladwyne, Pennsylvania, Sotheby's New York, 21 April 1995, lot 127.
