Lot Essay

There are two sofas of exactly the same profile but with addition of a gadrooned border outlining the back centred by a shell cresting and acanthus heading the legs. One was sold Christie's New York, 17 October 1987, lot 162, and one was sold Sotheby's London, 23 February 1990, lot 59. One of these was in the Henry Hirsch Collection (sold in these Rooms, 10-11 June 1931, lot 45) and is illustrated in R. Edwards and P. Macquoid, The Dictionary of English Furniture, London, rev. ed., 1954, vol. III, p. 95, fig. 55. One of these two was used in the Country Life advertisement in the 1948 Antique Dealers' Fair Catalogue, p. 105. Another larger sofa of the same model was in the Walter P. Chrysler collection, sold Parke-Bernet, New York, 29-30 April 1960, lot 139.
