2 volumes, including Appendix, 4o (310 x 250 mm). 44 lithographic, steel-engraved or mezzotint plates after J. Ross by J. Brandard, 16 colored, and 6 maps. (Occasional pale spotting, generally clean.) Original blue publisher's cloth, gilt-lettered on spine, with the advertising ticket of the binders Remnant and Edmonds tipped to endpaper (slightly shaken, some wear along joints, spine of volume I toned).
FIRST EDITION. As a result of Ross's failure on his first voyage, the Admiralty refused to support a second. In 1829, however, the sheriff of London, Felix Booth, enabled Ross to set out aboard the Victory with his nephew James Clark Ross. During the four Arctic winters they endured, James Clark discovered the North Magnetic Pole. "Sumptuous printing ... The [plates] are so excellent as to be worthy of preservation as gems of art" (Field).
