Château Montrose--Vintage 1869
Saint-Estèphe, 2me cru classé
Levels: one low-mid and one low shoulder; unlabelled; good colour for age
These bottles came from Hinton Admiral, the Hampshire estate of the Meyrick family who, at one time owned virtually the whole of Bournemouth. The cellar contained very large quantities of mid-19th century sherry, 150 bottles of Lafite 1875, over 120 bottles of 1881 Latour and, less commonly seen, a large quantity of the 1869 Montrose. The wine was immaculately binned with detailed bin labels indicating the amount purchased, the price paid, the date laid down, sometimes with the name of the butler who binned the wine. For example : "Claridge-Claret No.288 Chateau Montrose 1869. 25 dozen @ 120 (shillings per dozen). Packed (binned) 30 May 1888." Claridge was the name of the wine merchant. All the bottles at Hinton Admiral and Bodorgan were binned unlabelled, being identified by an oval shoulder label with Claridge's reference number and , of course, the informatve bin labels. Of the 25 dozen "packed" over 16 dozen remained when removed for sale at Christie's in June and October 1970.
Note made at pre-sale tasting: at 99 years of age, colour still deep and healthy; bouquet rich and powerful. Dry, still tannic. Good flavour and after taste. MB
