Château Lafite-Rothschild--Vintage 1869
Pauillac, 1er cru classé
Level: into neck; binsoiled label; recorked, capsuled and labelled by the Château in 1992
Provenance: the cellar of Lafite, sold in the 1950's to the restaurant Darroze, Villeneuve-de-Marsan, and offered at Christie's, September and November 1978. The Darroze family are well- known restaurateurs in Villeneuve and Langon and also produce a distinguished Armagnac. The late M. Jean Darroze acquired a wide range of old vintages of Lafite dating back to 1806 and all supplied by Lafite mainly in the mid - 1950's. The wines were all in superb condition, with outstanding to shoulder levels, checked and personally packed by my wife and myself in the early summer of 1978.
1869 was another sturdy and dependable pre-phylloxera vintage. A magnum opened in Paris in the autumn of 1969 was incredibly fragrant, a superb centenarian. This magnum should be excellent. MB
