Lot Essay

Marie Antoinette, Queen of France (1755-93) was the fourth daughter of the Empress Maria Theresia and the Emperor Francis I. She married the Dauphin, afterwards Louis XVI in 1770. The miseries of France became identified with her extravagance. She died by the guillotine.

Philippe de Champaigne (1602-74) was a French painter of religious subjects and portraits and was appointed painter to Marie de'Medici and was patronized by Louis XIII.
