Lot Essay

The obverse of the miniature is inscribed 'William duke of Buckingham' but it is probably a portrait of the English statesman, George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham (1592-1628). He negotiated the marriage of Charles I with Henrietta Maria of France. He was assassinated by a discontented subaltern, John Felton.
