Lot Essay

James Thomas Brudenell, 7th Earl of Cardigan (1797-1868) was an English cavalry officer. Appointed Major-General in 1847, he commanded the Light Cavalry Brigade, 'The Six Hundred' in the Crimea and led it to destruction with the fatal charge against the enemy guns at Balaclava in 1854. The knitted woollen jacket he wore against the cold in the Crimea is named after him.
