The sitter bears some similarities with Sir Henry Cary, 1st Viscount Falkland (d.1633), Lord Deputy of Ireland (see, for example, A.J. Finberg, A Chronological List of Portraits by Cornelius Johnson, or Jonson, Walpole Society, x, 1921-22, illustrated pl. xxxvii ).
