Lot Essay

Catherine of Braganza was the wife of King Charles II. This portrait derives from Huysmans' full-length portrait of the Queen dressed as a shepherdess, in the Royal Collection. Commenting on that picture, Sir Olivar Millar suggests 'As one of Huysmans' most important ad vivam portraits of his patroness it presumably served as the source for some of his smaller portraits of her' (O. Millar, The Tudor Stuart and early Georgian Pictures in the Collection of Her Majesty the Queen, London, 1963, I, p. 131, no. 289).
