MONTEGROSSI
The Rocca di Montegrossi fortress, located in the Gaiole in Chianti zone, dominates the entire Chianti region and Arno valley. The Ricasoli family's noble roots are traceable to the violent and dramatic 7th-8th century Longobards, but in modern times the excitable and passionate Marco Ricasoli focuses on creating wines that express the opulence and richness typical of Gaiole Sangiovese. The "San Marcellino" Chianti Classico Riserva bears the name of the small parish church in the center of the vineyards; in fact the first known reference to the Chianti designation ("Kiantis") was used regarding this parish. Shy-bearing, south-facing vines planted at an average altitude of 1,475 feet produce wines of tremendous extract and power. A special selection of Sangiovese is made in this vineyard in exceptional vintages only, with small amounts of Canaiolo and Merlot blended in, resulting in the magnificent Riserva. In such an exceptional year approximately 5,000 bottles are produced. The 1997 vintage recently received great praise from Robert Parker Jr., who described the wine as a "Blockbuster."
Chianti Classico Riserva--Vintage 1990
Tuscany, Montegrossi

"Looking for a profound example of Chianti? Check out Rocca di Montegrossi's 1990 Chianti Classico Riserva. From its smoky, tobacco, earth, and black-cherry-scented nose, to its dense, full-bodied, superbly concentrated flavors, this is a classic, intense Chianti that is just beginning to strut its stuff. Absolutely sensational, this wine should drink well for another 10-15 years. " Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate Issue 109 2/28/97
